FRIENDS OF THE LYTHAM ST. ANNES ART COLLECTION
I am indebted to the hard work and dedication, constant vigilance, support and encouragement that the Friends of the Lytham St. Annes Art Collection have given to the treasured Collection of paintings that they have inherited via wonderful donations from philanthropic individuals to the townspeople over the past one hundred years. This collection is now in the custody of Fylde Borough Council and funds are being raised continually for exhibitions and research and the all-important conservation of these precious artworks.
The Collection was started one hundred years ago on 29th June 1925 when John Booth (1857-1941) presented The Herd Lassie (1876) by Richard Ansdell. This painting was donated to the townspeople of Lytham St Annes, Lancashire to be ‘a nucleus for the formation of an art gallery’. This set a generous precedent which was taken up by eminent citizens of the time; the Collection now comprising of many wonderful paintings and artefacts by artists and sculptors of the time. The Collection is growing to this day. After years of neglect, the Collection is now, once again, recognised for the wonderful and historically unique asset to the town and the art world that it is.
Examples of the Richard Ansdell paintings that are now part of that Collection – by kind permission of Fylde Borough Council. These are all fine and almost life-like paintings of sheep worthy of a Royal Academician
